Thai quality goods

Postby Spitfire » Wed Mar 10, 2010 4:50 pm

Going to have a swift rant here about this. Ok, I know I should know better by now but got caught out twice recently through being in a rush. Firstly, bought some adesive clothes hooks from 7-11, put them on the back of a wooden door and left them to settle for a day or so. Went for a shower and hung a pair of trousers on them and went out for a few beers. Came back and it had fallen off the door and won't stick back on. Secondly, bought a Philips screw driver from Tesco and got home and the thing wouldn't even bite or fit any screw in the house and if used with a firm push then the design of the handle just ripped into the palm of your hand. Why do I even bother? What's the point of even making it in the first place? Just to piss people off? There is much complete crap for sale, even mascarading under guise of Tesco. So long as it looks like what it's supposed to, fine, working doesn't even come into it.

Tesco quality here is as good as it is in the UK!

Good tools are in Home Pro and decent family hardware stores like the ones we used to have back home. We have a great Chinese owned one close to us and the stuff is really very good quality.

Did you get any odd looks while you were out for a beer without your trousers?

Ha ha, no idea, the Chang mist was with me and I just remember getting drunkenly cynical about everything made here in Thailand, apart from the women.

With tools you get what you pay for in Thailand. It's worth paying the extra and getting imported (European or US) tools. Homepro has some good tools but they also have some cheap crap. The same goes for drills bits.
Please forgive me for I don’t know what I’m saying and therefore when I’ve finished saying it.

The quality of tools here really sucks. Just bought a rake today and hardly half an hour into it, one of the spikes fell off. All I could find was a rake made out of rebar by some 'skilled' craftsmen, that couldn't even put a good weld to it. Even the Chinese made ones back home that are only drop forged are of better quality. Don't get me started on screwdrivers. Spitfire is correct about the odd sizes that won't fit a screw and if it does, they are so soft that the tip will twist right off.
